Germany's political heavyweights are once again making room in their calendars for gamescom. Organizers Koelnmesse and game, the German Games Industry Association, have announced that Vice-Chancellor and Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil will attend the official opening of gamescom 2026 on August 26, joined by Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär, who holds responsibility for games at the federal level. Hendrik Wüst, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, was already confirmed earlier. After the opening ceremony, the guests of honour will tour the show floor to see the industry's latest developments up close.
Why the finance minister's visit is the interesting one
Political appearances at gamescom have become a tradition, but the specific mix this year is worth a second look. Klingbeil is not just Vice-Chancellor, he runs the Federal Ministry of Finance, which makes him the man who ultimately signs off on how Germany supports its games industry financially.
That matters because the German coalition agreement promises tax-based games funding, a model the industry has requested for years to compete with countries like France, Canada, and the UK, where studios benefit from reliable tax incentives. gamescom 2026 officially opens on August 26 and runs through August 30 in Cologne. The gamescom week starts earlier, on August 24, with the gamescom dev developer conference, followed by Opening Night Live on the evening of August 25.
