gamescom 2026 Is Completely Sold Out for the First Time, Expansion Already Planned
For the first time in its history, gamescom has completely run out of space. According to a new press release from organizers Koelnmesse and game, the German Games Industry Association, every available square meter of exhibition area for gamescom 2026 is booked, just one year after the show floor was last expanded. Demand from exhibitors has never been higher, and the organizers are already working on concepts to grow the event further from 2027 onwards. For fans heading to Cologne this August, it is the clearest sign yet that this year's show will be the biggest one ever.
A sold-out show floor is a statement
Trade fairs do not usually make headlines for running out of space, but this one deserves a closer look. gamescom only expanded its footprint last year, and the fact that the extra room has already been swallowed up says a lot about where the games industry currently stands. While parts of the business have spent the past few years talking about layoffs, studio closures, and tighter budgets, the world's largest games event is telling a different story: publishers and developers clearly still see enormous value in standing in front of hundreds of thousands of fans in person.
gamescom director Tim Endres called the fully booked halls a strong signal for the entire industry, and it is hard to argue with that. Felix Falk, managing director of co-organizer game, went a step further and declared that gamescom 2026 will be bigger than ever, with exhibitor demand at an all-time high.
The really interesting part is what comes next. The press release confirms that game and Koelnmesse are already developing expansion concepts for 2027. The goal is not just to cram in more booths, but to handle the growing demand while improving the visitor experience, a welcome promise for anyone who has ever squeezed through Hall 9 on a Saturday afternoon.
The exhibitor list keeps growing
Alongside the sold-out announcement, the organizers confirmed a fresh batch of exhibitors: aerosoft, Embark Studios, GIANTS Software, Konami, Level Infinite, NC, and Tencent Games are all locked in for 2026.
They join an already stacked lineup that includes Nintendo, XBOX, Ubisoft, SEGA, Capcom, CD PROJEKT RED, Electronic Arts, Bandai Namco, Krafton, NetEase, HoYoverse, and The LEGO Group, among many others. Embark Studios is a particularly fun addition from a community perspective, the Arc Raiders and The Finals developer has built one of the most engaged player bases in recent memory, and a big Cologne presence gives those communities a place to meet.
More stage program for the community
The press release also puts a heavy focus on community formats, and this is where gamescom 2026 starts to look genuinely different from previous years.
The gamescom event arena is being turned into a social stage across four days, hosting everything from the cosplay contest to a DidYouKnowGaming panel quiz. Games Done Quick brings its legendary speedrunning marathon to Europe for the first time as gamescom GDQ, with roughly ten hours of live program per day from Friday to Sunday and donations going to the Gaming for Democracy initiative.
Cosplayers get attention too: the cosplay village returns as the central meeting point, and the costume design rules have been revised together with community representatives to better balance safety and creative freedom. Even the location finder app is getting smarter, with new filters for accessible toilets and free water dispensers, a small feature that can make a long convention day noticeably easier.
The dates you need to know
gamescom 2026 runs from August 26 to 30 in Cologne, with August 26 reserved for trade visitors and media. The wider gamescom week already starts on August 24 with the gamescom dev conference, and Opening Night Live kicks things off for everyone else on the evening of August 25.
A sold-out show, an expansion on the horizon, and a program that leans harder into community than ever before, gamescom 2026 is shaping up to be a record-breaker well before the doors even open.
