Street Fighter Movie Fans Slam Cammy's Juri-Style Makeover in New Film

The new Street Fighter movie plays loose with its source material, but one change is getting the loudest pushback from fans of Capcom's series: Cammy. The typically stoic soldier is now a flirtatious, volatile, Harley Quinn-style henchwoman, and many viewers say she feels like a stand-in for Juri.
From tool to hero, minus the hero
In the games, Cammy is a former tool of the villain M. Bison. She was one of his "Dolls," young women brainwashed by the Shadaloo organization. She has been a series mainstay since Super Street Fighter II and has spent much of that time fighting Bison and trying to reclaim her autonomy.
The film sticks to the servant part of that history. Mel Jarnson, who fighting game movie fans may remember as Nitara in the 2021 Mortal Kombat film, plays Cammy as Bison's right hand. She is one of the few characters not shown cowering under his heel. She carries out his orders with authority and commands the room.
Fans have no quarrel with that setup. The complaint is about her personality. This Cammy is strangely seductive (she flirts openly with Chun-Li at one point) and prone to sudden outbursts. She fills the sadistic wildcard slot that Juri would occupy in a different adaptation.
Why Juri doesn't fit
Juri would not make sense in this role. She and Bison are about as far from allies as two characters can get, and she debuted in a later game than the Street Fighter II era the film draws on. It still looks as though the filmmakers wanted Juri's energy in the mix, and fans suspect it was grafted onto Cammy instead.
Viewers have been saying so in the film's discussion thread on Reddit. One fan wrote: "Was Cammy's actress trying to audition for Sindel?" The same user asked: "What was with that random angry scream when she was sitting with Bison?"
Another commenter laid out the Juri theory in full: "I think the writers really, really, really wanted to have Juri Han in this movie. But they couldn't because this is Street Fighter 2 (she was introduced in 4 IIRC) and she also hates Bison, so it wouldn't make much of a sense for her to work with him. So they made the worst possible choice and created a weird chimera of a character. She looks like Cammy White, but under the hood is Juri Han."
The same commenter objected to the Harley Quinn comparison and the giggling walk toward Chun-Li, adding that Cammy "is even colder than Chun-Li in the games."
A possible explanation
The film does not dwell on it, but Jarnson said in a recent interview that this version of Cammy is mind controlled like the rest of the Dolls. That leaves room for a sequel to break Bison's hold. The eccentric side could fade in favor of the hardened soldier the games established.
For now, this is the most drastic change the movie makes to any of its characters. The film takes almost nothing seriously and treats several other fighters loosely, but no one else has been rewritten as thoroughly as Cammy. Whether the mind control explanation satisfies fans will depend on whether a follow-up actually delivers the payoff.
