Onimusha: Way of the Sword Skips Minigames, But Phantom Realm May Return

Onimusha: Way of the Sword will not include the kind of bonus minigames seen across earlier entries, but director Satoru Nihei has left the door open to the possible return of the Phantom Realm, a long-running combat challenge mode that many fans treat as part side activity and part endgame test.

That distinction matters because older Onimusha games were packed with extras. The original Onimusha: Warlords had Oni Spirits. Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny added Puzzle Phantom Realm, The Man in Black, and Team Oni. Onimusha 3: Demon Siege featured Genma Puzzle Space, Oni Target Practice, and Adventures of Heihachi. Onimusha 4: Dawn of Dreams scaled that back to Arena, but the series still carried a tradition of unlocking small diversions alongside the main campaign.

Way of the Sword is taking a different approach. Nihei said the team is not building "minigames that you associate with" earlier Onimusha titles. He explained the reason directly: "We really wanted to focus on the swordplay action there, so we didn't put any extra time into minigames."

That answer fits what Capcom has been signaling with the new game's broader pitch. Way of the Sword appears to be centered on combat feel, duels, and a more concentrated action structure rather than the kind of menu-based or arcade-style extras that were common in the PlayStation 2 era. For a series returning after such a long gap, that focus suggests Capcom wants its identity to come from blade work first.

The more interesting tease came when Nihei was asked about the Phantom Realm. In past Onimusha games, the mode worked as a multi-floor gauntlet where players fought waves of enemies, collected drops, and pushed upward for stronger rewards. It was not always presented like a traditional minigame, but it occupied a similar role, a self-contained challenge outside the main story path with high-value prizes at the end.

Nihei did not confirm its return outright. Instead, he responded with a short, careful line: "Hmm, we'll see."

That is not an announcement, and it should not be read as one. Still, it is the kind of answer that keeps the possibility alive, especially for a feature with such clear history in the franchise. The Phantom Realm has been one of the series' most recognizable optional systems because it extends combat without pulling the player into a completely different ruleset. If Capcom truly wants to keep Way of the Sword centered on swordplay, a mode like that would fit more naturally than puzzle or novelty minigames.

For longtime fans, that may be the key takeaway. The new Onimusha is not reviving every old extra, and Capcom is being direct about that. At the same time, the studio does not seem eager to shut down the idea of bringing back one of the series' most durable side challenges. If the Phantom Realm does return, it would give Way of the Sword a piece of Onimusha history while staying aligned with the combat-first direction Nihei described.
