Sadie Sink Teases Jean Grey’s MCU Future After Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Sadie Sink has started talking publicly about Jean Grey’s future in the MCU, and her comments suggest Marvel is already shaping the character beyond Spider-Man: Brand New Day. In an interview with Variety, Sink said early research into Jean has centered on the mutant’s flaws, her relationship with her powers, and the internal struggle that will define where the character goes next.

Sink said those early conversations have helped her understand why Jean Grey stands out in the X-Men corner of Marvel. Speaking to Variety, she described the appeal of characters who are not immediately polished heroes. “The more I've gotten into it and researched, what makes them special is that they are all incredibly flawed and maybe have done bad things,” Sink said. “That makes them more compelling, complex characters and a more complex hero if they don't start out that way. And they have to find their relationship to their powers.”

That focus matters for Jean Grey more than most Marvel characters. Jean has long been one of the X-Men’s most powerful and volatile figures in comics, and Sink’s comments point to a version of the character built around that tension rather than a straightforward debut as an established hero. She added, “So, knowing Jean's struggle will be important in the future of her character and where she goes, just makes her really well-rounded, which I'm excited for.”

The remarks also indicate that Marvel’s plans for Jean do not stop with the bus appearance seen at the end of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Sink made clear, though, that she does not yet know the full roadmap for the role. “I don't really know yet, to be honest,” she said. “And when I say 'I don't know,' I mean I really don’t know.”

That uncertainty fits the current state of Marvel’s mutant rollout. An X-Men film directed by Jake Schreier is in the works, but it still does not have a release date. Sink is expected to be joined by Samara Weaving as Emma Frost and Kit Connor as Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, giving Marvel a recognizable core for its first major MCU-era X-Men lineup.

Jean Grey’s arrival carries extra weight because Marvel has been careful about how it introduces the mutants into the shared universe. Rather than opening with a full team launch, the studio appears to be seeding key characters one by one and using those introductions to establish tone. Sink’s emphasis on Jean’s flaws and instability suggests Marvel may lean into the character drama that has defined the best X-Men stories, where powers are often less important than identity, fear, and control.

The wider MCU calendar is also a factor. Avengers: Doomsday is set for December 18, and Avengers: Secret Wars follows in 2027, leaving Marvel several possible places to expand the mutant side of the franchise before a standalone X-Men movie arrives. Whether Jean appears again before that film remains unclear, but Sink’s comments make one thing plain: Marvel is already thinking about Jean Grey as more than a cameo, and her personal conflict is likely to be central to whatever comes next.
