Fortnite Pirate Shop Token Hunt Sparks Cheats, Paid Carries and $10K eBay Listings

Fortnite's One Piece crossover has players chasing a rare Pirate Shop Token that unlocks the item shop for free, and the hunt has already produced exploits, paid carry services and eBay accounts listed for thousands of dollars. Epic Games has called buying accounts and using fake tools a scam, and its terms of service prohibit both.
What the token does
Whoever finds the token can claim almost everything in the item shop for free over a two week period. Real-money offers, gifting and Battle Pass rewards are excluded. Anything claimed stays on the account permanently, which explains the scramble.
The token drops from chests, and there is no official drop rate. Players have estimated it at roughly one in every 700,000 chests, so legitimate luck is a long shot.
Shortcuts and paid carries
Players have found ways to speed up the process. Current methods involve using grenades and cannon balls to destroy chests inside locked vaults, which lets them open many chests at once without hunting down a key.
Others are trying to monetize it. One player shared a screenshot of an overlay that marks where every chest in a match is located, while offering to help others get the token for a fee. Their post read: "i can carry people for pirate access token ez for $ already helped 3 people lmk". Overlays like that are clearly not intended gameplay.
Some players are also selling tools that automatically farm the token.
Accounts for sale
The aftermarket has arrived too. Multiple eBay sellers are listing Fortnite accounts with Pirate Shop access for thousands of dollars. One listing asks $9,000 and accepts bids, while another is asking for $10,000 or nearest offer. Neither has drawn a bid so far, though that could change as the season ends on December 4.
Buyers would be taking a serious risk. Epic's terms of service explicitly ban buying and selling accounts, as well as cheating and exploiting, so anyone involved could be banned. A ban could also hit after a purchase, and a previous owner could contact support and claim the account was stolen. Either way, the buyer loses the account and the money.
Epic's response
Epic said in a statement: "Buying an account or using fake tools is a scam. This is just like any of the chests in Battle Royale, so every player has an equal opportunity to find Pirate Shop Access."
The studio's position is that the token is just another chest drop with the same odds for everyone. Players trying to skip the grind through overlays, vault exploits or purchased accounts are doing so against the rules, and the only sanctioned route remains opening chests and hoping the token turns up before the season closes.
