The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past: Release Date, Letten Region, Story and More

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is the third expansion for Geralt's 2015 adventure, due in 2027 on PC, PS5, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X. It sends the witcher to a new region called Letten to look for his missing friend Dandelion, and it is co-developed by CD Projekt Red and Fool's Theory. Here is what has been shown so far.
Release date and platforms
CD Projekt Red announced the expansion in May with only a title and a 2027 window, and that window still stands. The full reveal came at Gamescom 2026, right after the announcement of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, which lands on September 29, 2026. The Witcher 4 is targeting 2028, so Songs of the Past fills the gap between the two.
Because the remaster and the expansion add new content to the game, CD Projekt Red confirmed changes to the PC minimum requirements.
The remaster is a free upgrade for existing owners, with the two previous expansions included at no extra cost. Songs of the Past is a paid expansion, and no price has been announced.
Letten
The story unfolds in Letten, a region CD Projekt Red describes as a fully realized open world "comparable in scope" to Blood and Wine. As in the base game, you can explore it freely, and the studio says it is "packed with new quests, interesting characters, places to find, and monsters to find".
Letten is known as "the land of the plenty", with a lush, idyllic look inspired by the Polish and English countryside. Its architecture and customs have a pagan flavor, and the studio says the region is "sheltered from the conflicts" affecting the rest of the continent.
Story
Geralt travels to Letten to help Dandelion with "a family matter". The region turns out to be the bard's homeland. Dandelion's real name is Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount of Lettenhove, and you can visit the manor where he grew up. Black banners hang there as signs of mourning, which hints at why he came home after years away.
In the Gamescom demo, Geralt has an ominous dream after a wild night of celebrations in a place called Belleteyn. He wakes to find Dandelion gone. He teams up with Dandelion's cousin Lilla and heads to the Garden of Thorns, the one flawed spot in the region that everyone avoids, to investigate an old Lettenhove family legend.
During a RedStream at Gamescom 2026, the team said Geralt gets pulled out of retirement for another adventure, which suggests the story takes place after Blood and Wine.
Gameplay and new monsters
The demo showed Geralt exploring by boat and on Roach, plus combat that benefits from the remaster's updated camera and improved targeting.
In the Garden of Thorns, Geralt faces a new monster called the Swarmion, a ghoulish creature that shields itself with a swarm of hornets. He also has a new chain tool that works like a grappling hook. It latches onto the Swarmion so he can yank it closer and hit it with his silver sword. The chain also has a weak point system, and exploiting it at the right moment sets up bloody finishers.
Developers
Fool's Theory is co-developing with CD Projekt Red. The Polish studio made the isometric, character-driven RPG The Thaumaturge, supported gameplay and tools programming on Baldur's Gate 3, and is working with CD Projekt Red on the upcoming Witcher 1 Remake.
CD Projekt Red says an expansion of this scale would not have been possible without the remaster.
