Paramount Is Making a Live-Action Cyberpunk 2077 Movie With Transformers One Producer

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action movie set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing. Di Bonaventura's credits include Transformers One and several other Transformers films. Details beyond the producer are scarce, and the project appears to be at an early stage.

The film joins a franchise that started with CD Projekt Red's RPG and has since spread into novels, comics, and anime. The best-known anime is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which is getting a sequel this month.

Di Bonaventura has also produced Snake Eyes and Madame Web, among other films. No director, writer, cast, or release window has been announced, and it is unclear whether the movie will follow the game's characters or tell a new story in the same setting.

Plenty of material to draw on

Paramount has a lot to work with. The game's main story follows V and the digital ghost of rockstar Johnny Silverhand as they try to bring down the Arasaka Corporation. The Phantom Liberty expansion added a spy-thriller plot, and the game's many side quests carry their own self-contained stories.

The project sounds like it is still in early development, possibly before pre-production has even begun. That suggests it could be a long wait for casting news or a script.

Paramount's game slate

Cyberpunk 2077 is not the studio's only game adaptation. Paramount is co-producing the upcoming Street Fighter movie, which hits theaters next week. It is also working on a live-action film based on Activision's Call of Duty series, with Deepwater Horizon director Peter Berg attached to direct.

For CD Projekt, a Hollywood film adds to an expanding multimedia footprint. The studio's world already reaches audiences through the anime and its tie-in publishing, and a feature film would bring it to a mainstream theatrical audience for the first time.

Which part of Night City's story would you want to see on the big screen? The main V and Johnny plot, the Phantom Liberty espionage thread, or something entirely new?
