Opening Night Live 2025 Recap: Black Ops 7, Silksong and a Packed Two Hours

gamescom 2025 is underway, and Opening Night Live did its job: two hours and change of trailers, dates, and reveals in front of 5,000 people in Hall 1, the show's biggest stage yet, with Geoff Keighley and co-host Eefje "sjokz" Depoortere steering the marathon. The headline moments: Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 locked in its November 14 launch, and Team Cherry's eternally awaited Hollow Knight: Silksong was declared "100 percent" launching this year, with a playable demo waiting on the show floor. Here is what stood out.

Black Ops 7 gets its date

Activision used its confirmed headliner slot exactly as expected: Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launches November 14, with an early access weekend planned for October. After the worldwide reveal was promised for Cologne weeks in advance, the show delivered the full package, and anchoring the year's biggest commercial release around a gamescom stage says plenty about where the industry's marquee moments now happen.

Silksong is real, playable, and coming this year

The loudest cheer of the night had nothing to do with blockbuster budgets. Keighley's on-stage assurance that Hollow Knight: Silksong is genuinely, definitely launching in 2025, paired with the world's first playable demo at the show, turned years of running jokes about the game's absence from every showcase into the story of the week. The lines at the demo booth over the coming days will be their own news item.

The rapid-fire rest

The show packed plenty around its two anchors. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 was announced for PC next year, reviving one of the RTS genre's most beloved series. The LEGO Batman game got its reveal, giving the LEGO partnership another high-profile DC outing. On the adaptation front, a Sekiro anime was unveiled and Fallout season 2 received its premiere date, further proof that game-to-screen pipelines are now standard showcase material.

Live-service updates filled the gaps: Ghost of Yotei showed a new mode, and Fortnite's Squid Game collaboration detailed player-made games arriving August 20 and the Front Man himself joining on August 26.

The format is bigger than ever

Beyond the announcements, the striking thing was scale. ONL's move to Hall 1 with 5,000 seats, nearly sold out well in advance, and last year's roughly 44 million digital views make this the closest thing gaming has to a global season opener. The sjokz-Keighley duo kept the pace brisk, and the mix of megabudget reveals and an indie stealing the show summed up modern gamescom neatly.

The halls are open through Sunday, August 24. With Silksong playable, Black Ops 7 dated, and a record 1,500-plus exhibitors waiting, the week in Cologne is off to exactly the start the organizers wanted.
