gamescom lan 2026 Draws Record 4,000 Players as Cologne's LAN Party Grows

The gamescom lan keeps proving that the classic LAN party is anything but dead. According to the organizers' final report, the third edition of the community event drew a record 4,000 attendees to the Koelnmesse halls from March 20 to 22, up from 3,500 last year, which itself had doubled the premiere edition. With 225 creators on site, 85,000 euros in prize money, and some of Germany's biggest trading card game tournaments to date, the event has quietly become a fixed date in the European gaming calendar. The next round is already booked: February 19 to 21, 2027.

Three years, three records

Growth is the story here. The gamescom lan launched as an experiment to stretch the gamescom brand beyond its August mega-event, and three editions in, the trajectory speaks for itself: attendance has climbed every single year, and the number of participating creators rose for the third year in a row to 225 influencers celebrating LAN culture with their communities.

MYI CEO Cedric Schlosser described the event as becoming a genuine tradition within the community, and the organizers point to the many returning groups who plan their year around it. TaKeTV's Dennis Gehlen highlighted another development worth noting: new movements growing out of the event itself, like the streamer collective The Nest, which stands for the growing presence of women in the gaming scene.

Serious competition, serious prize pools

Beyond the sleeping bags and energy drinks, the competitive side of the gamescom lan has grown teeth. A total of 85,000 euros in prize money was up for grabs, including 20,000 euros in streamer MckyTV's EPIC Win Challenge alone.

The fighting games area delivered the standout esports moments. The second edition of the global Smash Ultimate Major attracted around 350 participants, with French player crepe salée taking the title. In Riot Games' 2XKO Super Major national qualifier, Noka earned a spot in the international finals in Japan, a nice reminder that a Cologne LAN party can now be a stepping stone to global competition.

TCGs are quietly taking over

One of the most interesting trends in the report: trading card games keep expanding their footprint. The gamescom lan hosted Germany's biggest Riftbound tournament with 168 participants, drew 156 players to Disney Lorcana, and topped everything with a Yu-Gi-Oh! WCQ Regional that attracted 234 players, the biggest tournament in gamescom lan history.

For an event born out of PC gaming culture, the strength of the tabletop segment says a lot about where community gaming is heading: the borders between digital and physical play keep blurring, and events that offer both are reaping the rewards.

The bigger picture

For Koelnmesse and game, the gamescom lan is part of a deliberate strategy to keep the gamescom brand active year-round, alongside gamescom latam in São Paulo and gamescom asia x Thailand Game Show in Bangkok. Koelnmesse COO Oliver Frese framed the LAN's success as proof of how strongly the brand is growing beyond its August flagship.

Next up on that flagship front: gamescom 2026, running August 26 to 30 in Cologne. And for everyone who prefers their gaming with a sleeping mat and 72 hours of uninterrupted play, the gamescom lan returns February 19 to 21, 2027.
