EPI is in trouble again. gamescom epix, the free interactive community adventure of gamescom, is back for 2025 with a self-deprecating premise every gamer will recognize: the event's "Electronic Protective Intelligence" has stumbled into a dungeon full of gaming sins, and players must fight their way out through nine chapters and more than 100 quests themed around lag, spoilers, and the eternal agony of character selection. The adventure is playable online now and on location in Cologne once gamescom opens on August 20, with digital trading cards, discounts, tickets, and merchandise waiting as rewards.
A dungeon crawl through gaming's everyday pains
The theme this year is genuinely funny. Instead of a generic fantasy setting, the epix dungeon is built from the small miseries of gaming life: players must escape the "Lag Labyrinth" and survive the "Spoiler Swamp" on their way back to the surface. It is the kind of tongue-in-cheek writing that shows the organizers understand their audience, everyone who has ever lost a ranked match to a connection drop will feel seen.
Across nine chapters, more than 100 quests offer puzzles and challenges, with completed quests unlocking prizes ranging from digital content and discounts to free tickets and physical merch. Notably, there are no payment options this year at all, the whole adventure is simply free.
Trading cards, now with community art
The digital gamescom trading cards return as part of the reward loop, and this year's set has a nice twist: more than 40 new cards feature artistic takes on the various areas of gamescom and well-known content creators like Starletnova, Amar, and Tolkin, and for the first time, five card designs come directly from the community itself.
The collecting mechanics get a meaningful upgrade too. Duplicate cards can now be traded directly with other players instead of just being sent one-way, which turns the card system into an actual social feature rather than a checklist.
Smoother to play, especially on your phone
On the technical side, epix 2025 brings app notifications for new quests, friend requests, trade offers, and unlocked rewards, plus an optimized overview of chapters and partner quests. Mobile navigation has been streamlined to need fewer clicks, sensible priorities for a game most people will play in queues, on trains, and between hall visits during the show itself.
gamescom epix runs from now until the end of September at gamescom.global, with the on-site component activating when gamescom opens its doors from August 20 to 24.
