gamescom congress 2025 Opens Call for Topics: Immersion, Responsibility, Well-Being
The gamescom congress is looking for its 2025 speakers, and you do not need to be a game developer to get on stage. The organizers have opened the call for topic proposals for the 17th edition of the conference, taking place on August 21 in Cologne as part of gamescom. Until May 18, anyone with a compelling idea about the potential of games can submit a proposal for the program, which this year revolves around three focus themes: The Next Level of Immersion, Gaming and Responsibility, and Gaming and Well-Being.
What the congress actually is
Among the many events of the gamescom week, the congress is the one that looks furthest beyond the show floor. It has grown into Europe's leading conference on what games can do outside of entertainment, in business, culture, education, science, and politics. Last year, over 900 guests attended in person with thousands more following digitally, and the 2025 edition expects more than 150 international experts across its stages.
That mix is what makes the congress interesting even for regular players: it is where teachers explain how games teach history, researchers show what game mechanics do in healthcare, and policymakers debate the frameworks the industry needs.
The questions on the table for 2025
The call for proposals gives a clear picture of where the debate is heading. On the immersion track, the organizers want practical examples of XR and spatial computing in education, culture, and public administration, plus ideas on using emotional engagement to communicate complex subjects like history and politics.
The responsibility track asks how games can promote social participation, democratic education, and diversity, and what digital responsibility means for platforms, communities, and monetization models. The well-being track, finally, digs into how games foster social bonds and resilience, and what they contribute to physical health and mental well-being.
Anyone submitting needs just a meaningful title and a brief description; no detailed presentation is required at this stage, and expertise in game development is explicitly not a prerequisite.
Why this matters more than it seems
It is tempting to dismiss conference programming news, but the congress has quietly become one of the most consequential parts of gamescom. The themes discussed there, games funding, democratic education, serious games, immersive tech in schools and museums, have a way of showing up in policy months later. Germany's political establishment attends gamescom in growing numbers each year, and the congress is where the substantive conversations happen.
The gamescom congress 2025 takes place on August 21 in the Confex center in Cologne. If you have ever wanted to shape the conversation about what games can be, the stage is open until May 18.
