Games Done Quick Is Coming to Europe: gamescom GDQ Debuts This August
Speedrunning fans in Europe finally get their moment. Games Done Quick and gamescom have announced gamescom GDQ, a three-day charity speedrunning marathon running from August 28 to 30, 2026, live from the world's biggest games event in Cologne. It is the first Games Done Quick event ever hosted in Europe and the organization's first official partnership with gamescom, and donations will benefit Gaming for Democracy, an initiative supporting civic engagement through games culture.
What gamescom GDQ will look like
According to the announcement, gamescom GDQ runs daily from 10 a.m. to roughly 8 p.m. CEST across the final three days of gamescom, with its own stage on the show floor. Visitors can watch the runs live on site, while everyone else can tune in through GDQ's official Twitch and YouTube channels, the same global broadcast setup that has made events like AGDQ and SGDQ appointment viewing for millions.
Expect the familiar formula: a curated lineup of the world's best speedrunners breaking games in ways their developers never imagined, from frame-perfect platforming to glitch showcases that turn 40-hour RPGs into 20-minute sprints. Run submissions open on May 4, and the full schedule will be announced later.
Why this is a big deal for European fans
Games Done Quick has been a cornerstone of speedrunning culture since 2010, but attending in person has always meant a trip to the United States. That barrier has now fallen, and GDQ's own team highlighted that the European event creates space for runners who never had the opportunity to travel to a US marathon.
For gamescom, the partnership is just as smart. The show has been steadily expanding its community programming beyond booths and trailers, and few formats embody gaming community spirit better than a GDQ marathon: skill, dedication, humor, and a charitable cause rolled into one continuous live show. gamescom director Tim Endres noted that speedrunning captivates millions and that the format strengthens gamescom's role as a platform for social engagement.
A marathon with a message
Instead of the medical charities GDQ events traditionally support, gamescom GDQ will raise money for Gaming for Democracy, an initiative created with the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Foundation for Digital Games Culture that promotes democratic values and civic engagement through gaming.
That choice fits the moment. gamescom has been leaning into the societal role of games across its 2026 program, and a donation drive for democratic engagement broadcast to a global audience is about as visible as that commitment gets. GDQ brings serious credibility to the effort: since 2010, the organization has raised more than 60 million dollars for charities including Doctors Without Borders and the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
