devcom Becomes gamescom dev: Developer Conference Joins the gamescom Brand
After eight years, one of Europe's most important developer events is changing its name. The devcom developer conference, the traditional curtain-raiser of the gamescom week, will be called gamescom dev starting in October 2025, the organizers announced during this year's show. The rebrand formally folds the conference into the gamescom brand family, ending years of explaining that yes, devcom is in fact the official developer conference of gamescom.
A name that finally says what it is
The announcement comes with a refreshingly honest admission. Stephan Reichart, managing director of game events and organizer of the conference, recalled that from the very first year people kept asking whether devcom was "the game developer part of gamescom", which is exactly what it was, hence the subtitle it carried for years. From now on, the branding does the explaining: developer topics happen at gamescom dev.
The conference has earned the promotion. Since its premiere in 2017, it has grown into one of the world's significant developer events, drawing hundreds of speakers and thousands of professionals to Cologne every August, this year with more than 300 speakers across 17 stages in the Confex center, and studios from Crytek to Valve in the halls.
Why the rebrand matters beyond marketing
game association boss Felix Falk framed the renaming as a way to create more synergies between the gamescom formats, and Koelnmesse COO Oliver Frese praised the new name as short, internationally understandable, and high-recognition. Beneath the brand-speak sits a real strategic point: the gamescom family has been expanding aggressively, gamescom latam, gamescom asia x Thailand Game Show, gamescom LAN, and now gamescom dev, and a unified naming scheme makes the whole ecosystem legible worldwide.
There is also a subtle repositioning at play. gamescom has increasingly presented itself not just as a consumer festival but as the games industry's central business week, and putting the developer conference front and center under the main brand strengthens exactly that claim.
What stays the same
The organizers stress that the recipe does not change: knowledge transfer, networking, keynotes, panels, hands-on workshops, matchmaking sessions, and the beloved side events from developer nights to award ceremonies. Only the sign over the door is new.
The first edition under the gamescom dev name arrives with the 2026 gamescom week, where the conference will kick things off as usual before the main show. For developers, the takeaway is simple: same conference, clearer name, bigger brand behind it. And for everyone who spent years explaining what devcom was, that job is finally done.
