Leaked Mass Effect Universe Trailer Reveals BioWare's Final Game

A trailer for Mass Effect Universe, the game BioWare was developing before EA shut the studio down this week, has leaked online. Journalist Jason Schreier has confirmed it is genuine. The footage was built from pre-production assets and shows a small-scale spy thriller set after the Reaper war, with fan favorite Liara T'Soni in the mix.

The video first surfaced on the Mass Effect subreddit, where fans, influencers, and industry insiders quickly spread it. The moderators could not verify it at the time, so its authenticity stayed an open question until Schreier weighed in.

"Can confirm that this is a real trailer of the Mass Effect game that BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday," Schreier wrote on Bluesky.

What the trailer shows

The footage offers a look at what would have been Mass Effect 5. It was assembled by a small team inside BioWare using pre-production assets, so it works more as a mood piece than a gameplay demo. It points toward a spy thriller-style story with a tighter scope than the trilogy's galaxy-spanning finale. The setting is the Milky Way, at some point after the Reaper war that closed out the original trilogy.

Liara T'Soni is among the returning characters teased.

Fan reaction

Reactions on Reddit have leaned toward grief and anger. "God, this makes me even more distraught," wrote one user, TerraxFormer. Another, harrywilko, said: "A spy thriller is such a cool concept for a re-entry to the series," before adding, "Man, I'm just so sad and angry."

A reversal from EA

The leak lands awkwardly against EA's earlier messaging. In November 2025, BioWare told fans that "EA remains committed" to Mass Effect 5's development. EA has since closed the studio and cancelled Mass Effect Universe.

The franchise is not entirely dormant. A Mass Effect TV series is still in production despite BioWare's closure.
