GTA 6 Reportedly Targets 30FPS at Launch, 60FPS Uncertain

Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently running at 30 frames per second on consoles during development, with no confirmed 60FPS mode for launch. That claim comes from comments attributed to Rockstar North co-director and head of development Rob Nelson after a recent studio visit, and it suggests Rockstar is still weighing its final technical targets on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The latest discussion around GTA 6 performance started after creator Davy Jones published impressions from a hands-on studio visit on YouTube. A separate report from Flow Games said Nelson told visitors that the game is running at 30FPS on consoles in its current state.

Flow Games attributed the statement directly to Nelson and reported that Rockstar has not locked in other technical details yet. According to that account, Nelson said the team still needs to consult its technical staff before confirming whether a 60FPS option will be available at launch or added later. The report also said he did not provide specifics on resolution, ray tracing, or other graphical settings.

If that holds, GTA 6 would follow a familiar Rockstar pattern on console. Grand Theft Auto 5 launched at 30FPS on its original console versions and only received a 60FPS mode years later through its PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrade. Red Dead Redemption 2, despite arriving on current hardware through backward compatibility, still has no official 60FPS patch from Rockstar.

That history matters because GTA 6 appears to be pushing for dense simulation and large-scale open-world detail at the same time. Rockstar recently showed gameplay captured on a base PS5, which immediately raised questions about whether players would get multiple display modes at launch, especially a lower-resolution performance option. For now, there is no public confirmation of that.

There is also no word yet on whether enhanced console hardware could change the picture. Rockstar has not outlined any differences for higher-end systems, and Nelson's reported comments leave open the possibility that performance targets could evolve later in development or even after release.

For console players, the practical takeaway is simple: expect 30FPS unless Rockstar says otherwise. That does not rule out improvements down the line, but it does mean anyone hoping for a guaranteed 60FPS mode at launch should wait for official technical specifications.

The PC question remains separate. Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6, and the company's release history suggests that platform could arrive well after the console launch. GTA 5 reached PC long after its original console debut, and Rockstar has often staggered versions of its biggest games.

Until Rockstar publishes final platform details, the current reporting points to a console release built around 30FPS first, with higher framerate support still undecided.
