GTA 5 Shapeshifter Mod Turns You Into Any Pedestrian You Stealth Attack
Published today · view counts update daily
A script mod called Shapeshifter V brings a Prototype-style power to Grand Theft Auto 5: stealth attack any pedestrian and you instantly become that person, outfit and all. It serves no obvious goal, but it is a novel way to wander Los Santos, and it comes with a few side effects, including some very mismatched voices.
How the mod works
The mechanic is simple. Sneak up on a pedestrian, land a stealth attack, and your character takes on their appearance. If you spot an outfit you like on a passerby, you can take it, and the mod makes no distinction between a jacket and the person wearing it. You become a roving blob that consumes and replicates, which is exactly the energy of the game it borrows from.
That game is Prototype, the 2009 title about an angry, flu-like protagonist who can look like anyone he eats. It also lets you turn an arm into a sword, and it ends up with a fight against a flesh-covered Christ figure in Times Square. Shapeshifter V has none of that, but the core disguise-by-consumption idea carries over.
The voice problem
Changing your body does not change your voice. Whoever you become keeps the protagonist's voice lines, so expect the piercing screams of Shawn Fonteno, who voices Franklin, to come out of the mouths of old men and young men alike. This is most noticeable when your new body gets caught in a passing tornado or teleported a few thousand feet into the sky, both of which are easy to arrange in a heavily modded game.
Part of a daily modding run
Shapeshifter V is the latest entry in a daily series of GTA 5 mods aimed at either turning the game into a PC version of GTA 6 or breaking it entirely. The latest installment came with a side note on a technical oddity: GTA 5, which had been launching only in windowed mode, now launches only in fullscreen. The author chose not to investigate and is hoping it sorts itself out.
That hands-off approach fits the project. GTA 6 has no PC release date yet, so for now GTA 5's mod scene remains the place where PC players can get a taste of ideas Rockstar has not shipped. A shapeshifting script is a long way from a Vice City map, but it adds a genuinely new way to play an eleven-year-old game.
If you want to try it, the download and installation details are on the mod's page. As with any script mod, expect it to stack with others in unpredictable ways.
