gamescom 2025 on Record Course: Bigger Halls, More Indies, Black Ops 7 at ONL

Five weeks out from opening day, gamescom 2025 is stacking up records. The organizers report exhibitor numbers 11 percent above the same point last year, an entertainment area growing by an entire hall, the biggest indie area in the event's history, and the first confirmed Opening Night Live headliner: Activision will use the show for the worldwide reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Geoff Keighley hosts ONL on August 19, once again joined by co-host Eefje "sjokz" Depoortere.

Black Ops 7 gets the big stage

The marquee news for most players is tucked at the end of the announcement: the next Call of Duty will be fully revealed at gamescom Opening Night Live. Activision choosing Cologne for the worldwide premiere of Black Ops 7 says plenty about where the biggest marketing moments in gaming now happen, ONL drew around 44 million digital views last year, and this year the show moves to Hall 1 with 5,000 seats and its biggest stage since the format launched in 2019.

The sjokz-and-Keighley hosting duo returns as well, giving the show a welcome double act after years of one-man marathons.

The show floor keeps swelling

The exhibitor momentum from the record early-bird phase has clearly held. Newly confirmed names include CI Games, Disney+, Electronic Arts, GIANTS Software, Konami, LEGO, Level Infinite, Marvelous, Netflix, Paramount, SEGA, and Tencent Games, joining a roster that already spans everyone from Bethesda, Blizzard, and Capcom to Nintendo, Ubisoft, Xbox, and The Pokémon Company. Streaming giants exhibiting alongside publishers is now simply part of the gamescom furniture, a sign of how entertainment brands chase the gaming audience.

To fit the demand, the entertainment area expands into Hall 8, and the indie area grows to occupy half of Hall 10.2 for the first time. A new digital location finder launches on August 20 to help visitors navigate it all, real-time position, saved exhibitors by hall, and nearby exits included. Anyone who has wandered Koelnmesse's 200,000-plus square meters knows this is overdue.

Event arena: from The Witcher in concert to Sabaton

The event arena moves into Hall 1 with upgraded stage tech, and the program lineup is delightfully eclectic: The Witcher in Concert, a joint show by Wargaming and metal band Sabaton, Viva La Dirt League, and the traditional cosplay contest.

Esports gets two new formats as well, the offline grand finale of the Techniker Prime League on August 24 and the Fortnite Creator Championship on August 22, co-organized with the gamescom LAN and creators Amar and Rohat.

gamescom 2025 runs August 20 to 24 in Cologne, with Thailand as the first Southeast Asian partner country. Between the Black Ops 7 reveal, the biggest indie area ever, and a concert lineup ranging from Geralt to power metal, the show is shaping up to earn those record projections.
